Mike Wilson:
“[…] lean has enjoyed a roller coaster search history, but taken on average, it has been relatively consistent since search results have been recorded since 2004 worldwide. Six Sigma, on the other hand, has been dealing with a sliding board of interest. It seems it might be on its way out. Perhaps it was more of a fad than some holistic “cure-all” for industry. Michel – I’ve never been a fan of six-sigma and see lean as a much more of an organization-wide approach to business. It may have been a good for Motorola in the 1980s but consultants and training companies have since latched on to it and made promises that are not even close to realistic. Unfortunately, this has made it that much tougher for those of us who believe in lean to convince people who have been disappointed by the lack of long-lasting results from the six-sigma PR machine.
Even as much as I believe in lean as the way to go, it is not a cure-all. A company still has to offer products or services that customers value. It’s not an easy road, but lean can help a company gain control over its processes and systems, but if it offers something that people don’t want to buy, the organization will not last long.
Thanks for the post.
