Good article and very close to home for most organizationations!
Let me just begin by congratulating Ms. Hansen, Mr. Bret Petrie and their team for achieving this. I must add that hadn’t she realized how QC was being looked upon by the Production/Manufacturing department(s), she wouldn’t be able to come to the understanding of what to do…
Quality at most companies suffers, precisely because QC is viewed as the responsible party for catching errors and protecting the customer. As a result the “builders, makers & renderers” of the products/services feel little or no responsibility for Quality! And that’s exactly what Life Technologies was able to detect & successfully change! Kudos!
Having had worked for Toyota and its subsidiaries for 20 years, I noticed that it’s the “Philosophy about Quality, which sets in the System and it is the Discipline within the organization, which makes Execution possible and sustainable”. Toyota calls it JKK, (Ji Kotei Kanketsu), which means Quality Built-in with Ownership. Simply put, every Team Member at the Gemba (Shop-Floor) is a “mom & Pop” business and he/she is held accountable for “everything” going on in his/her little business…..From Safety to Quality to Cost to Delivery and to Customer Satisfaction….
I would very much like the opportunity to see JKK in a company in the U.S., as this article surely warms my heart about the possibility of Successful Quality System implementation in a non-Japanese company!
